This is just the kind of personal experience story I love to approve for posting. Thank you. I had not heard of MSM for acid reflux or for COPD so this is interesting to read.

Of course, we both have to take care to advise that MSM or any other natural remedy is not represented as replacement for any needed medical testing, evaluation or treatment.

I take MSM for my eyes and for joint pain and find it quite effective for both. Because I work on the computer a lot, I get eye strain and MSM seems to help.

There's a good bit of info on MSM here:

Edited to add paragraph breaks, to make more readable. admin.

I too am not a fan of prescription medicines.

Having been in the medical community all of my career, from treatment to research, I could tell you all kinds of horror stories. Most of those come from the reasearch side. These companies do everything from scew result data to actually eliminating specific testing results. I know this is a little off topic, but I will address the inhalers.

My mother, at one point or another had been on all of them for her COPD. First a little background on the severity of her condition. She had progressed to 6 liters of oxygen continuously, so it was a little late in the game for me to try what I tried. At rest her oxygen saturation levels would stay at about 88 to 94%. When removed from the oxygen, within 60 seconds her sats would drop to 63 to 66%. So as you can see, it indeed was a little late in the game. I will briefly outline our results and method anyway, along with the results.

After reading many independant studies on the benefits of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on emphysema patients, both human and non-human, I decided to give it a try. We started her off with 3000 mg dose per day for the first week. Once we saw that she had no adverse reaction that dose was increased to 7500 mg. MSM comes in dosages upto 1500mg tablets. I wont get into the description of MSM as it is readily available through your search engine of choice. I will sufice to say that it is an organic sulfur compound that is a biproduct of the production of Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO).

No significant change in her sats were noted in the first 7 days of taking 7500 mg. On the 7th day however, her at rest sats jumped from a 91 % average to 98%. Her sats had not previously even peaked at 98 for almost a year. The following week the nursing home staff had taken her off oxygen complely while they prepared a portable tank. I was furious about that!

After 5 minutes of franticly trying to get someone to get her back on oxygen, I took her sats. To my amzement, they had only dropped to 84 %. It was another 2 minutes before they got her back on oxygen and in that time her sats dropped to 66%. This was after they had her up in a chair in the dining room. Remember though, prior to the MSM her sats would drop to that in under 60 seconds at full rest. In my mind something was clearly happening.

As a side note: We originally decided to try MSM not for the acid reflux or GI upset but for the COPD. However the benefits from MSM for acid reflux became quite clear as well. Ultimately she became unable to even ingest the MSM or other oral meds she was on and we lost her. I have a website that deals with health issues now. I am in the process of researching holistic treatment of COPD with Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) along with stabilized liquid oxygen. I will post the results of these tests on my website as soon as it is feasable. I will say however that the initial results seem to look even more promising than the original MSM treatment we had placed my mom on.

My aunt has middle stages of COPD now and is one of our test subjects. I have manges to obtain 9 other volunteers with COPD. Not quite clinical trial levels but it will have to suffice. Another thing that all test subjects have in common is acid reflux. This tends to support my theory that the prescription meds are a huge contributing factor.

There is no doubt in my mind that medications have contributed to my own mother's acid reflux so I would have to agree that it may have been a factor in your Mom's struggle. I'm so sorry for your loss. I treasure each day my Mom has of feeling good.

In fact, Mom just told me that there is news coming out about Advair, an inhaler she was on for years, saying that it could bring on asthma attacks, etc. While Mom was on that, she had horrible, horrible coughing fits which, of course, irritated her throat and made her reflux worse too. Also, she got in some serious trouble taking Zetia and Crestor together.

She's on Spiriva now and says it works great but I can't help but wonder what they will discover about that one a few years down the road.

I'm not a big fan of the prescription drug. Mom's on about 8, which cost her around half her little social security check when she's not in the doughnut hole, or gap, and which she can't even cover when she's in the gap.

The hardest part for me, as a wellness counselor, is that I cannot suggest anything natural whatsoever for fear of interaction with one or more of her meds. Even the simplest, most healthy thing has caused reaction, as I mentioned when talking about the goji juice before.

Thanks for your post. I could not leave your link in because it appeared to be an advertising link but if you want to post a guest article about acid refulx, I'll review it and, if chosen, will include a link to your site, assuming it has content and not just products on it for sale.

My mother also had acid reflux before she passed away. I always suspected it was due to all the medications she was taking for congestive heart failure, COPD, emphysema, osteoperosis as well as many others. She was also on oxygen all the time. Do you think that could have contributed to her acid reflux

Oh, absolutely. I did a five-part article on juices after my mom had an experience between goji juice and her meds. Definitely check with your doctor.

It's always good to consult your doctor when deciding to drink potent juice drinks while in medication.
