MSG and Sugar Alcohol Content in Izze Drinks

I’m not shy about asking manufacturers what is in their product. Sometimes, it’s hard to get a straight answer. I wrote the Izze team to ask if Izze drinks contain MSG.

The first response:

The natural flavorings are essences or extracts derived from natural plant sources. Combining natural flavorings is what gives a product its distinctive flavor or taste. Since these flavor combinations are unique to IZZE products, they’re a trade secret and considered proprietary.

Additionally, IZZE beverages do not contain any MSG. In fact, the FDA requires that if flavor enhancers such as MSG are added to products, they must be included on the ingredient line.

After that response, I wrote back to ask if the product contained any zylitol, sorbitol, erythritol, malitol or other form of sugar alcohol, since all of those affect me in a manner similar to MSG.

Here’s the latest reply:

There’s no MSG or sugar alcohols in these beverages. IZZE Sparkling Juices are free of refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, caffeine & preservatives.

I’m glad the drink does not contain refined sugars, sugar alcohols, MSG, high fructose corn syrup, etc. but would love it if there were more transparency on all ingredients.

Side note: I hate that word “proprietary”. I know companies need to protect formulations but the consumer also has a right to know every ingredient. I’m not asking for the amounts used, just tell me what’s in the stuff.

The label that irks me the most on food and beverage containers is “natural flavors”. What the heck does that mean? I don’t have an IZZE in front of me so I don’t know if it has the irksome words but I see it on everything.
